Online Trichomoniasis Treatment
Trichomoniasis is easy to cure, but many people put off treatment because talking about an STI face to face feels awkward. With Your Doctors Online, you can talk to a licensed online doctor privately from your phone, 24/7. The doctor will go over your symptoms and any test results, give you a lab requisition if you need a test, and send a prescription to your pharmacy when medically appropriate.

What are the treatment options for trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is the most common curable STI, and it is treated with prescription medicine taken by mouth. Over-the-counter creams and gels are not recommended for it, so you will need a prescription.
Here is what treatment usually involves:
- Testing: Trich cannot be diagnosed from symptoms alone, so a doctor can give you a lab requisition to take to a lab near you. Women can also use an FDA-authorized home test that checks for trich, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.
- Medicine: Women are usually treated with a 7-day course of metronidazole, and men with a single dose.
- Other STI tests: Because trich often shows up alongside other infections, the doctor may suggest testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia too.
- Pregnancy: If you are pregnant, tell the doctor before you start. Pregnant women who have symptoms should still be tested and treated. Metronidazole is the medicine used in pregnancy, while tinidazole is avoided. The doctor will talk with you about the timing.
Get checked in person right away if you have strong pain in your lower belly, a fever, or you are pregnant and have cramps or leaking fluid.
What antibiotics can we prescribe online for trichomoniasis?
The medicines that cure trich are called nitroimidazoles, the only class of medicines approved by the FDA for this infection. Metronidazole is the one most doctors start with. Tinidazole and secnidazole (Solosec) are taken as a single dose. Metronidazole vaginal gel, which is used for bacterial vaginosis, is not recommended for trich because it does not reach the infection well enough.
Do not drink alcohol while you take metronidazole or tinidazole, or for at least 3 days after your last dose, because it can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and headaches. Our doctors can prescribe antibiotics online when medically appropriate.

What is trichomoniasis and what causes it?
Trichomoniasis, or trich, is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a tiny parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Most people who have it cannot tell, so it is easy to pass on without knowing.
Here is how trich spreads:
- Through sex without a condom with a partner who has trich
- Most often from a penis to a vagina or from a vagina to a penis, and it can also pass from one vagina to another
- From a partner who has no symptoms at all, since people with trich can pass it on even if they feel fine
In women, trich usually infects the vagina, vulva, cervix, or urethra. In men, it is usually found inside the penis. It is not common for trich to infect other body parts, like the mouth, hands, or anus.
What are the symptoms of trichomoniasis?
Most people with trich do not have any symptoms. When symptoms do show up, they can start 5 to 28 days after you get infected, or much later, and they can come and go.
Women may notice:
- Itching, burning, redness, or soreness of the genitals
- Discomfort when peeing
- A thin discharge that may be clear, white, yellowish, or greenish, with a fishy smell
- Discomfort during sex
Men may notice:
- Itching or irritation inside the penis
- Burning after peeing or ejaculating
- Discharge from the penis
Without treatment, trich can last for months or even years, even when the symptoms fade.
Does your partner need treating too?
Yes. Your sex partners should be treated at the same time as you, even if they have no symptoms. If they are not, the infection can pass back to you after your treatment is done.
Here is how to keep it from coming back:
- Do not have sex until you and your partner have both finished treatment and any symptoms are gone.
- Your partner can talk to one of our doctors online and get their own prescription.
- Women should get tested again about three months after treatment, even if their partner was treated.
- Use condoms the right way every time you have sex.
Getting treated once does not protect you in the future. You can get trich again if you have sex without a condom with someone who has it.
FAQs about trichomoniasis treatment online
Can a man get rid of trichomoniasis without treatment?
You should not wait for it to go away. Trich may clear up on its own in some men, but there is no way to know if it has, and you can pass it to a partner in the meantime. Men are usually treated with a single dose of metronidazole, so treatment is the simplest way to be sure it is gone.
How long can a man carry trichomoniasis?
Without treatment, a man can carry trich for months or even years, often with no symptoms at all. When symptoms do show up, such as burning after peeing or discharge from the penis, they can start 5 to 28 days after the infection or much later.
What can be mistaken for trichomoniasis?
Trich is often mistaken for bacterial vaginosis (BV) or a yeast infection, because all three can cause itching and an unusual discharge. A fishy smell can happen with both trich and BV. Since trich cannot be diagnosed from symptoms alone, a test is the way to know which infection you have.
Who is more at risk for trichomoniasis?
Anyone who is sexually active can get trich. It is more common in women than in men, and older women are more likely to have it than younger women, so testing still matters after menopause. Your risk is also higher if you have had two or more sex partners in the past year, a partner who has trich, or a past STI.
What are the long-term effects of trichomoniasis?
Without treatment, trich can make it easier to get or pass on HIV and other STIs. In pregnancy, it can lead to an early birth or a baby with a low birth weight. Studies have also linked trich to infertility, so if you are planning a pregnancy, get treated and talk to a doctor about your fertility health.
Can trichomoniasis cause a sore throat?
It is very unlikely. Trich does not commonly infect the mouth or throat, so a sore throat is more likely to be caused by something else, such as a cold or strep throat. Talk to a doctor if it does not get better.
Can you get trich from a UTI?
No. A UTI cannot turn into trich. Trich is caused by a parasite that spreads through sex, while most UTIs are caused by bacteria. Both can cause burning when you pee, though, so a urine test helps the doctor tell them apart.
What happens if metronidazole doesn't work for trichomoniasis?
Most of the time, trich comes back because of reinfection from a partner who was not treated, not because the medicine failed. In that case, the doctor will usually repeat the same treatment. If you have not been exposed again, the doctor may prescribe a longer or higher-dose course of metronidazole or tinidazole. Make sure your partner is treated at the same time, or it can keep coming back.
What is the new treatment for trichomoniasis?
The newest FDA-approved option is secnidazole (Solosec), a single dose for people 12 and older. You sprinkle the granules on applesauce, yogurt, or pudding and eat it within 30 minutes. Your partner should be treated with the same dose at the same time.
How to cure trichomoniasis without going to the doctor?
You cannot cure trich without a prescription, but you do not need to go to a clinic to get one. With online trichomoniasis treatment, you can talk to an online doctor from home and have your prescription sent to the pharmacy you choose.
Is trichomoniasis contagious?
Yes. Trich spreads easily through sex, and you can pass it on even if you have no symptoms. Avoid sex until you and your partner have both finished treatment.
